Introduction
What does it mean to actively remember, and who gets to shape what is carried forward?
Join Museum Director Rosslyn Shipp for a guided tour of Collecting Memory, an exhibition that looks at how memory becomes part of the historical record and the choices involved in deciding what is collected, preserved and shared.
This month’s tour focuses on Active Remembering, an ongoing part of Collecting Memory that moves beyond looking at what has already been collected to ask what may be missing. Through the Memory Workshop, the Museum is creating opportunities for people to contribute their own memories, experiences and materials, recognizing that collections are continually shaped by the relationships we build in the present.
We’ll look more closely at the Museum’s work with the Chilliwack Pride Society and Our History Honoured, a community gathering created to make space for 2SLGBTQIA+ histories and experiences that have not always been represented in local collections. Contributions from the event became part of Collecting Memory, while some participants chose to offer personal letters, zines and other materials to the Archives, creating new records for the future.
Together, we’ll consider what these contributions can tell us, what absences in a collection can reveal, and how actively building relationships with communities can change the stories available to those who come after us.
