The Mountains Around Us: Peter Scott
A Pop-Up Art Exhibition in Historic Chambers Hall
The mountains surrounding Chilliwack are more than a familiar backdrop. They shape our sense of place, hold personal memories, and connect us to the landscapes we call home.
Join us at the Chilliwack Museum & Archives for a special pop-up exhibition featuring the paintings of local artist and author Peter Scott. Presented in the Museum’s historic Chambers Hall, the exhibition brings together Scott’s artistic interpretations of the Chilliwack Cascades, inviting visitors to consider the beauty, character, and personal significance of these familiar landscapes.
Born and raised in Chilliwack, Scott has spent more than four decades capturing the mountains through his artwork. His paintings reflect a lifelong relationship with the region, shaped not only by his artistic practice but also by his experiences working with Chilliwack Search and Rescue in the late 1970s.
A Lifetime Inspired by the Mountains
For Scott, the Chilliwack Cascades have been a constant source of artistic inspiration. His work reflects an intimate knowledge of the region’s mountains, valleys, and changing landscapes, developed through years of observation, exploration, and personal experience.
These connections are also at the heart of his 2024 book, My Soul Lives in These Mountains, published by Hancock House. Bringing together 40 mountain paintings spanning 1978 to the present, the book traces Scott’s 46-year career as a professional artist alongside his experiences with Chilliwack Search and Rescue.
Through painting and storytelling, Scott offers a deeply personal perspective on the mountains, reminding us that landscapes hold more than geographical features. They carry experiences, relationships, and memories that become part of how we understand the places around us.
Art, Place, and Memory
Situated in the Land of the Ts’elxwéyeqw, the Chilliwack Cascades have long shaped the lives and experiences of people connected to this region.
Scott’s paintings invite us to look again at landscapes we may pass every day, considering how colour, light, perspective, and personal experience influence the ways we see and remember familiar places.
Presented within the historic Chambers Hall, this intimate exhibition creates an opportunity to spend time with the artwork and reflect on our own relationships with the natural world.
